Doctor Strange is the story of Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and how his life changes following a car accident which takes the use of his hands from him. When traditional medicine fails him, he heads to Nepal for healing and learns about the ways of ‘The Ancient One’. From here on we see the classic superhero formula – we see how Strange finds his power and helps to battle against evil forces which are attacking Earth.
I very much enjoyed Doctor Strange, I felt it had a good balance of what a Marvel film should contain – humorous characters, an intriguing yet simple storyline and the feeling of wanting to kick ass as soon as you leave the cinema! As the movie title suggests, the film is indeed ‘strange’ but I felt as if Marvel had succeeded in creating an abstract masterpiece. The film is particularly funny as well, Beyoncé and Adele even get shoutouts!
I thought Benedict Cumberbatch’s portrayal of Dr. Stephen Strange was fantastic! Yes the American accent is a little odd at first however you get used to it straight away. The character suited him perfectly, arrogant and cocky just like ‘Sherlock’ which made him very comfortable settling into the role.
Where does Doctor Strange fit into the Marvel universe? Well Marvel do what they do best, there are a number of references to the Avengers and even possibly a reference to Captain Marvel…? The signature post-credits scene also suggests that will be seeing much more of Doctor Strange in films to come.
Go and watch, wait for the DVD or avoid altogether? – If you are a Marvel / Benedict Cumberbatch fan then I would definitely go and give it a watch, if not then I would wait for the DVD!
