So I’m somewhat late to all of this 13 Reasons Why hype but better late than never hey?! I absolutely loved the first series and the way that they ended things in the last episode got me extremely disappointed when I found out series 2 isn’t scheduled for release until 2018.
I must warn you before you watch it, this is quite a graphic programme which does cover a lot of taboo subjects, however I do think it is a must watch for teenagers and young adults to make sure they take away some of the very important messages the series covers. I think the messages the series conveys is probably why it has been so popular, I myself have known people who have been in a similar situation to Hannah and I feel that if I had watched 13 Reasons Why a few years ago then I would have been able to deal with situations a lot better and offer much more valuable support.
Away from the messages that this show so brilliantly conveys, the build-up and story is fantastically pieced together – granted the opening few episodes are quite slow however it all builds up to the final couple of episodes and is well worth the initial grind. As well as a fantastic story, there is a great cast as well, Katherine Langford who plays Hannah Baker was particularly impressive and stood out to me, as I think she managed to perfectly capture all the motions a teenage girl goes through.
What makes the show so relatable to people and one of the reasons why I believe it has received such a great reception is the concept of the show. Having one episode or ‘tape’ per person gives us a real insight to each characters life and their actions and reasons for their actions. This allows you to fully understand the character and I think this what makes the series so compelling and hit home so hard.
To watch or not to watch? – For me, shows like 13 Reasons Why make my Netflix subscription completely worthwhile! I absolutely love 13 Reasons Why and urge to you to watch it!

I love tv shows that focus on showing us more than one character 🙂
I’m still yet to watch this

I haven’t watched it yet but I have heard positive things. The only negatives were about the relationship with the both main characters (her effect on him).

It is quite shocking to watch as things develop and you see how one thing spirals out of control and effects multiple people, especially Hannah’s effect on Clay. But like I said, it’s conveys all these messages fantastically, you’ve gotta give it a watch!

I really like the way you write!
I watched 13 Reasons Why, and as you I liked it a lot! But for me it was a bit too graphic, especially the last 2 episodes.
The message of the TV show is amazing, but for me, it’s a bit too “simple”. There can’t be 13 reasons why someone commits suicide. It’s not the fault of 13 people, depression and suicide are so much more complicated and it is as if Hannah is blaming everything on other people and not on the way she thinks/ they way her depression makes her think. Of course all these people contributed to her suicide, but it’s not that easy in real life… Anyways, other than that I really enjoyed watching 13 RW and the subjects it approaches are really important and still way too taboo in our society.
But I don’t think I’m gonna watch season 2. For me, this series should only have one season, I don’t know what’s going to happen next.

Thank you so much! I get what you mean about there cannot be 13 reasons why someone commits suicide, and there were parts which I thought were extremely far fetched as being a reason for Hannah to commit suicide.
I know what you mean about the series should have only been one season long but for me it just ended with too many questions unanswered!

Which bits did you find far fetched? On the one hand it is fiction as that’s what novels are. But, having been a teenager myself fitting in can be hard expecially if it’s made worse by rumours.

For example a couple of the reasons why Hannah had blamed people for a reason when they weren’t really anything. It’s definitely an eye opening series!

I am a Netflix junkie and love all their original series! I have been wondering about this show, but have stayed away due to the “heaviness” of the subject. However, I enjoyed the other dark shows Netflix has released. It’s not the first time they are graphic.

Loved this series. Completely mind blown the way they focused on more than just suicide. This tv series glorified the real impact high school puts on us as teenagers. Such as drama, boyfriends, girlfriends, fitting in, etc. excellent.
